In the Media: Along the Keel

Podcast with a local RI waterman

With spring officially here and the final days of winter coming to a close, we take a trip down to Richmond, Rhode Island venturing into Ocean State Spearguns R&D facility sitting down with founder Matt Novakovich. What started as a hobby, and building guns for friends and family has quickly turned into a business, building guns for folks from around the country and giving him an excuse to spend more time on the water. Today we get the backstory behind how the small-time speargun builder came to be, his approach to the craft, and of course a few fish tales along the way.

In the Shops: Drift Surf Shop

Local RI surf shop in Wakefield

Surfing and spearfishing are complimentary sports; when storms are in the area and the swell is up, visibility goes out the window.  When the seas are flat and theres not a wave around, grab a mask and a gun and get after those fish!  Drift Surf Shop in Wakefield RI has a OSS display!   Rob is a lifelong ocean lover, whos spent his life chasing waves around the globe.  We're proud to have our guns hanging on the wall of a local surf shop, a stones throw away from some great spearfishing.  Stop the shop to check the guns out and pick up those surf essentials!  Order through the shop to get discounted wood burning on your custom gun!

Sponsership: Salt Pond Coalition

Being fully immersed in the marine environment, spearos quickly see the first hand effects of humans impact on that environment. The ocean is a vast and bountiful resource, but it is at risk of overexploitation and irreparable damage if not cared for.  The salt ponds here in South County RI are a unique ecosystem that is the fragile interface between the  land (humans) and the ocean.  The Salt Pond Coalition is a non-profit organization with the mission “to protect and enhance the health of the salt ponds for the benefit of wildlife and people.”  To support this effort, OSS has committed to donating handmade cutting boards for their annual fundraising auctions.

In the Shops: Roanoke Island Dive Shop

Outer Banks, North Carolina

While OSS founder Matt has adopted Rhode Island as his home, he spent his formative years plying the waters of Maryland and North Carolina.  In fact, his first experience spearfishing was on a wreck just past the breakers in Kill Devil Hills.  Every year, team OSS enjoys travling back to the family house and dive the warm waters of NC with Vicarious Charters.  Concequently, OSS guns are sold through the local dive shop Roanoke Island Outfitters.  If you're ever in the Nags Head/Roanoke Island area, stop by to check out the guns and pick up some freedive or scuba gear!  If you have time, book a charter with Vicarious Spearfishing, you wont be dissapointed!
